Prenucleation Clusters and Non-classical Nucleation

چکیده

In this contribution, we review the recent literature on an alternative crystallization pathway involving stable clusters prior to nucleation and show that the prenucleation cluster pathway is a truly non-classical concept of nucleation. Prenucleation clusters are solutes with "molecular" character in aqueous solution. It becomes evident that the stable clusters may have been concealed by the so-called ion pair concept and activity effects. We show that non-classical nucleation via stable prenucleation clusters is a highly valuable concept for a novel understanding of phenomena observed in bioand biomimetic mineralization, which however may hardly be rationalized by means of classical nucleation theory. The importance to combine experimental and theoretical studies is emphasized.

Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Prenucleation Clusters, Classical and Non-Classical Nucleation

Recent observations of prenucleation species and multi-stage crystal nucleation processes challenge the long-established view on the thermodynamics of crystal formation. Here, we review and generalize extensions to classical nucleation theory. Going beyond the conventional implementation as has been used for more than a century now, nucleation inhibitors, precursor clusters and non-classical nu...

Stable prenucleation calcium carbonate clusters.

Calcium carbonate forms scales, geological deposits, biominerals, and ocean sediments. Huge amounts of carbon dioxide are retained as carbonate ions, and calcium ions represent a major contribution to water hardness. Despite its relevance, little is known about the precipitation mechanism of calcium carbonate, and specified complex crystal structures challenge the classical view on nucleation c...

Calcium Phosphate Prenucleation Complexes in Water by means of ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Calcium phosphates are the main inorganic components of bone and tooth tissues. The nucleation of calcium phosphates is thought to proceed by aggregation of so called prenucleation clusters (PNCs), which are already present in body fluids before nucleation. This nucleation pathway cannot be fitted in the frame of the Classical Nucleation Theory. We investigated the structure and verified the st...

The Molecular Mechanism of Iron(III) Oxide Nucleation.

A molecular understanding of the formation of solid phases from solution would be beneficial for various scientific fields. However, nucleation pathways are still not fully understood, whereby the case of iron (oxyhydr)oxides poses a prime example. We show that in the prenucleation regime, thermodynamically stable solute species up to a few nanometers in size are observed, which meet the defini...

A classical view on nonclassical nucleation.

Understanding and controlling nucleation is important for many crystallization applications. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is often used as a model system to investigate nucleation mechanisms. Despite its great importance in geology, biology, and many industrial applications, CaCO3 nucleation is still a topic of intense discussion, with new pathways for its growth from ions in solution proposed in ...
